use of article

Is ‘of’ required or optional in these example?

He jumped out ‘of’ the window.
He walked out ‘of’ the door.

I am confused because i am not sure if ‘of’ alters the meanings and without it, something sounds missing.

Thanks.

At one time it was normally included, but nowadays Americans usually omit it. British speakers use both forms.

Note that "of" is a preposition, not an article.
