Use of article

I have known that a noun followed by a modifying phrase or clause usually takes a definite article in front of it. But in the following sentence the modified noun doesn't take any article at all. "On the wall, there are frescos depicting episodes from the life story of Ramayana." Would someone kindly explain this to me? Thanks!

The frescos have not been mentioned before. There is no need to put the definite article before frescos . Such sentences are very common: There are people who don't like coffee.

The frescos have not been mentioned before. There is no need to put the definite article before frescos. Such sentences are very common:
