Use of 'and'

My friends are I are arguing over a sentence. Is it grammatically alright to say "Mum and Dad give me presents. I am happy and enjoy celebrating the birth of Jesus at Christmas."

My friend said the two sentences are not in parallel structure and therefore should not use 'and' to link them up. But I think it's grammatically OK as the two sentences are in S-V-O structure.

What do you think?

Anonymous My friend said the two sentences are not in parallel structure and therefore should not use 'and' to link them up. Correct, but this is not a grammar mistake; it is a problem of poor style. Anonymous I think it's grammatically OK You are right, but note my remark above.

  • A direct object (O) must be a noun, and 'happy' is not a noun.
