Use of add

When we say x adds to y do we mean that x adds itself to y or do we mean that x adds something else to y ?
For example when we say "She adds to the glamour of the movie" what exactly do we mean ?

This is an intransitive use of "add." It's more common to see "add" is a transitive verb - I added more salt to the stew. I added my comments to the bottom of the report.

Can this also mean that she adds more glamour to the movie ?
In that case "add" would be transitive ?
