Use Is or Does?

Hi,

When i ask a simple question, i always confuse with "Is .." and "Does ...".

It is appreciated if anyone could tell when I should use "Is ..." and "Does ..."?

Example:

Is something work?

Does something work?

Does he speak to his teacher?

Is he speak to this teacher?

Thanks,

Hong
