Use if 'did' with 'can / could'

Hi ,

My boss got mad at me for using the follwoing sentence

Could you tell me when did this incident ook place ?

I don't understand what is wrong with it. Can you tell me what the correct form is. He says it should be : Can you tell me when the incident took place ?
