Usages of perfect

Hello....

Without further context, the sentence below can mean both continuative perfect and also experiential perfect?
Continuative perfect in the sense that I am still ill, and expeirential perfect in the sense that I have an experience that I was ill in the past.

***********

I've been ill.

Top answer

Essentially yes, though the first case does not necessarily imply that you are still ill. You may have just recovered, or at least be in the process of recovering. The second meaning may be somewhat unlikely in practice.

  • Virtually everyone has been ill at some point in their life, so it hardly warrants saying.
  • The phrase may work better with more of a surrounding context, however.

Is this correct understanding of your explanations?
