Usage vs Use

Hi.

I didn't mannage to google this out so I have to ask.

What's the difference between "Use" and "Usage" considered as nouns?

I have a book called "Grammar in use" therefore I assume "Use" means something like "Practice".

My dictionary shows me that "Use" means "Manipulation, habit, function, usefulness, consumption" and "Usage" stands for "Custom, practice, use"

Most of the times I have a feeling that tells me which one to use but sometimes I'm lost.

E.g. "Usage/Use of a word." I'd go with "Usage" but I'm unsure. Where would you use "Usage" instead of "Use"?

Thank you in advance.

Dear Hardell I have a book called "Usage and Abusage (A Guide to Good English)" It is probably similar in purpose to your book, which suggests that the two words are becoming quite close in meaning I would say.. - "Use" is the way that a word is spoken or written on one or most occasions (how the word is often used) - "Usage" describes the customs and practices that may belong to a word It is difficult to come up with an example.
