Usage or would

Can would be use for the following situations?

a) Imagine if you are given a task of drawing a family tree. The steps you would take would(will???) be finding the relations among family member.
b) If he doesn't pay the ransom his wife would(will???) be killed.

Often people use will for the above examples but I wonder if 'would' can be used.

Yes and no.

a) 'Imagine that you are given the task of drawing a family tree. The step (that) you would take would be finding the relations among family members.' Grammatically, I don't believe there is anything wrong with this (I am open to correction, however); stylistically, it is overkill, and better form would be: 'the step you would take is finding the relations...'
