Usage of word "awarded"

I read a news which goes like this "XYZ AWARDED ABC PROJECT". When I read it in detail I understood that XYZ got a project called ABC from some other company. So shall that news not be this way "XYZ WAS AWARDED ABC PROJECT"? Please explain the correct way of using the word "awarded" and why it has been used that way in the news headline.

Thanks.
