I would like to know, what does the word well mean here and why is it used..?

I was standing at the door watching it and .... well, was just standing there and watching.

I was standing at the door watching it and .... well, was just standing there and watching.
It doesn't have much meaning at all. It is just indicates a hesitation in speaking for a thought. People today use uh, you know, and other space-filling expressions.
