Usage of useful

Can the adjective useful refer to people, or is it used only for things? For example, is the sentence You're of no use to me the same as You're not useful (or maybe You're useless) to me ?

Also, can you help me with this transformation?

Thousands of athletes run the London marathon every year.

Thousands of athletes ........................ the London marathon every year.

My guess is take up but I'm not quite sure (the task is to use take and no more than five words).

Thanks in advance

Yes. The word 'useful' can be used for people. I feel 'Thousands of athletes take part in the London marathon every year' sounds better.
