Usage of unless

Can we have unless following so? Such as: He was not very talented, so, unless he were rich, he would not be able to make it to the top.

Is it OK to use the subjuntive were here? It does express a hypohetical statement, but is unless usually a marker for the subjunctive like 'if' is?

I believe subjunctive would be right (whether we use 'if' or 'unless' or anything else) for the reason you mentioned: it is hypothetical.
