Usage of the word swipe

When we touch a card to a reader to get on the bus, we still have to use the word swipe? i think swipe means pulling a plastic card through a machine. However we don't pull it through the machine and we just put it onto the surface of the machine, right? Is there a good word to express touching a card to the machine?

Thank you so much as always and have a good day.

There's no rule, but I would use 'touch' or 'press' rather than 'swipe'.
