Usage of the word pedagogue

Hi!

I would like to use the word "pedagogue" while describing a person in an approving way, such as in the sentence below:

"My grandfather was a born pedagogue; it gave him great pleasure to impart information."

But the definitions of the word I read to several dictionaries gave me the sense that the word has a negative connotation.

Can anyone help, please?

Perhaps this is because it is very old-fashioned, almost archaic. Perhaps it sounds a little too close to truly negative words like pedant and pedophile. The word teacher is usually seen as very positive, Why not say that?
