Usage of the word 'chase'

I still think that 'chase' and 'chase down' are interchangeable in some sentences, referring to definitions of Macmillan dictionary.

Chase down : http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=to http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=try http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=hard http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=catch http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=someone http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=or http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=get http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=something http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=that http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=you http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=need.

Chase : 4. [TRANSITIVE] http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=want http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=such http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=as http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=a http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=job, http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=prize, http://www.macmillandictionary.com/search/american/direct/?q=money.

But I am not sure if native English speakers use the word that way in daily lives or is there more that I should know about the word, 'chase'? What do you think? Thank you so much as always in advance.

'Down' is an adverb of completion; it suggests that the chase was completed successfully; 'chase' does not carry that meaning.
