Usage of the word "change"

Hi,

If you're in a convenient store (in the USA) and about to buy a small item (a pack of chewgum) but all you have on you is a hundred, what do you ask the clerk to make sure he can consummate the transaction?

1. Do you have change of a hundred?
2. Do you have change from a hundred?
3. Your preference

Thanks!

Hello again, First, a couple of non-native constructions in your question itself: 1. the store is called a convenience store , not a convenient store 2. it is usually called chewing gum 3.

  • consummate is way to formal for this use--just say make the transaction .
  • change of a hundred' In AmE, i think most people would usually ask: Can you change a hundred dollar bill?

Another scenario - you have a $20 bill, but you need some one-dollar bills (singles).

You ask someone if they have change FOR a twenty.

It doesn't matter - the person will say "I've got two tens - will that work?" and you say "Oh, sorry, I need singles."

You can also ask if they can "break" a twenty.

Hi,

For your first query, I''d usually just say 'Sorry, this is all I've got'.

He/she can see it's a hundred.

For your second query about the $20, I'd just say 'Can you give me ones for this, please?'

Best wishes, Clive
