Usage of "the"--(The) lighting equipment connected to

A human sensor detects people when they are in the sensing area of the sensor. The sensor can be connected to various types of lighting equipment.
In the above context, is the definite article before "lighting equipment" in the following sentence optional?

(The) lighting equipment connected to the sensor may turn on or off abruptly if the sensor is affected by electrical noise.

"The" may not be required if I am talking about just any lighting equipment connected to the sensor, but I also feel that "the" may be required because "lighting equipment" is restricted by the phrase "connected to the sensor."

I would like to hear your opinion.

Thank you in advance.
