Usage of tense

I got it sir.

Sir, the person is dead, so I am sure both of the below ones r in past tense, but how do with had and without had make difference?

"He had led by an example. "

"He led by an example. "

We use had when it happened long time ago or it means something else?


This is in relation to my doubt on tenses.

I imagine you mean "by example", not "by an example". "lead by example" is a set phrase.
