Usage of tense

Is this correct english?

I congratulated my friend for opting for computer science course and in return she asked how I got to know or did someone tell me?

So I said "nobody told me I found it out myself. If someone did tell me how would they know you optedfor CS when you didn't anyone." (Did I use the highlighted tense correctly?)

Can I also say "how would they know if you had opted? (Is the usage of had correct when I have used only would not would have?)

Thank you.

tostyle un " N obody told me . I found it out myself . I f someone had told me , how would they have known (that) you opted for CS when you didn't tell anyone ?

  • tostyle un " N obody told me .
  • I found it out myself .
  • I f someone had told me , how would they have known (that) you opted for CS when you didn't tell anyone ?
  • I suppose this is how you would say it if it made sense, but to me the whole concept seems illogical.
  • Basically you seem to be saying "If X had happened, then Y", where Y shows how X cannot have happened.
