Usage of "substantially"

I know how to use the adjective "substantial" in sentences. For example,

(1) He lost a substantial amount of money.

(2) He made a substantial profit.

(3) There was a substantial increase in prices of computers.

(4) He gained substantial popularity.

I am going to rewrite (1) - (4) using the adverb "substantially".

(5) He lost money substantially.

(6) He made a profit substantially.

(7) Prices of computers increased substantially.

(8) His popularity expanded substantially.

I made up those sentences myself. My non-native speaking friends and I think (5) - (8) sound odd when the adverb is used. Do you agree with us? Thanks.
