Usage of special

OK...third post in an hour. I have been pondering a few issues and suddenly craving answers.

I'm wondering if the word "special" is an absolute (ungradeable) adjective or not. I don't see it listed as one in any absolute adjective lists, but there are no comprehensive ones.

And, if it isn't, are there limitations on its usage (i.e. what type of items could be compared) ? I am finding many sentences with "more special than" patterns which mostly appear strange.

'Special' seems quite gradable to me. My third wife was more special than my first wife.
