Usage of Simple Past/Past Perfect

Hi!

Please could you tell me which of the sentences below is correct in terms of tenses and why?

"I realized what I wrote after I had sent the post." or "I realized what I had written after I had sent the post."?

First I wrote the post, I sent it and then realized I had made a mistake. I wrote the first sentence spontaneously, but is it correct?

Thanks in advance!

Top answer

I realized what I had written after I had sent the post. Once I had sent the post, I realized what I had written. I now realize that I have incorrectly written what I sent in the post.

  • I realized what I had written after I had sent the post.
  • Once I had sent the post, I realized what I had written.
  • I now realize that I have incorrectly written what I sent in the post.
  • (Three alternatives): As you explained, the sequence generates the tenses.
  • First I wrote the post = had written I sent it = had sent then realized = past tense had made a mistake (correct).
