Usage of 'request'

Could you confirm whether both of the following sentences are correct? Also, it there any meaningful difference between them?

1. I made a request for sending the goods by air.
2. I requested to send the goods by air.

Neither of those is a good sentence. I suggest:

I requested that the goods be sent by air.

Then, how about "I made a request to send the goods by air?"

I guess that is passable, but it is not the greatest sentence ever written, in my opinion. The implied subject of "to send" seems somewhat vague and uncertain.
