usage of "of the"

I am not sure how to use "of the" in connecting words.
Example:
I may either use "of the" as in:
"identification of the retirement"
Or I may instead skip the "of the" and just write
"retirement identification".
But most of the time we use "of the" which actually makes the sentence longer.
So what is the appropriate thing to do?
