usage of "its"

Why don’t we use an apostrophe for 'its' while it indicates possession?
Example: "its relative importance increased"

Top answer

Well one reason could be that it avoids confusion with the contraction "it's" (= "it is")

Using an apostrophe would be very odd. Why should we? There is no apostrophe in the other possessive pronouns: his, hers, yours, ours etc.

His, her, my and their are spelt without apostrophes. That's why its requires no apostrophe.
