Usage of "in which"/where

Dear memebers,

Please explain me how to choose between usage of "in which" and "where".

1> Deforestation significantly alters the population of an area by creating a habitat in which
few species and little vegetation can survive.

2> Deforestation significantly alters the population of an area by creating a habitat where
few species and little vegetation can survive.

Which of the above 2 better than the other ??

thanks,
Sharad.
