Usage of 'once' and 'first'

1) We met once 2 years ago and then we met a second time here.

2) We met first 2 years ago and then we met a second time here.

Do you think that both sentences are natural and there is not much meaning difference between them?

Thank you so much in advance.

He did it once in 2005, and again in 2008.

I got this one from another teacher and then do you think that it should be He did it first in 2005, and again in 2008.
Or either one is fine and they mean the same?

Thank you.
