Usage of not in a sentence.

Not that it mattered to him, but he had forgot to lock his car door. (It didn't matter to him, but)

(is the comma optional here also?)


Why would a writer choose to use not instead of say writing: Instead of his bank manager.

Is this just for making the sentence sound more fluid.


It was his acquaintance he fell in love with, not his bank manager. (instead of)

He read the letter to himself, not knowing who wrote it. (unaware of)
