Usage of 'more of ~'

Dear all,

I hope you are doing as well,

I came across the below sentence when I listen BBC English.

"this could be seen as a compliment but started life as more of an insult"

From here, I don't have any idea of 'as more of ~'.

How do I supposed to understand this part and how to distinguish 'as more of insult'?

Can I split like 'life /as /more of an insult'?
