Usage of "look forward"

"I am looking forward to your favourable reply soon" or "I look forward to your favourable reply soon."

Both are used. My preference would be to use the simple present (look) as this is an abstract use of the word. I would of course say: I am looking at his picture right now if I were talking about something more concrete.
