Usage of "Innovative Invitation".

My friend showed me an invitation card which he had received recently. The card was placed inside a guitar-shaped box which was something new for me. So I said- "That's very innovative" but my friend said that it was wrong. According to him, I should have said- "It's an innovative invitation" instead of "That's very innovative" or "The invitation is very innovative". I'm not a native English speaker so I want to know which one of them is correct? Was I speaking it wrongly?

Thanks.

I don't know why my friend was trying to argue with me on its usage then. Silly
