Usage of in which?

I learnt that when we use "in which", the "in" must be come from the phrasal verb such as "interested in" like "The way in which people are interested.". However, in following sentence, I don't know why we use "in which". "The way in which social media has changed the world.". Is "in which" always interchangeable with "where"?
