Can I say the following phrase:

There are fifteen people in the employ of our company

You can, but it's awfully formal. It would be more usual to say, "Our company employs fifteen people," or "There are fifteen people employed by our company."

My English teacher took issue with me over that sentence , she said it was WRONG.

I just acquiesced.

Can you believe that ? Some teacher she is !
