Usage of Having

Hi,

I would like to know where and in which situations we can use the word "Having" and why?

Has it to do with stative and dynamic verbs.

I have been told having can only be used in a few senarios, rest all are incorrect.

I am having fun/nice time/sex.
I am having food.
Having said that...
I am having a baby.

I cant recall the other sentences.

I have been told that "I am having a headache or I am having a conversation" is incorrect.

It has been explain that having either means eating or consumption or possesion nothing else.

Is it true? What are your views on this?

Thanks a bundle

Hello Everyone,

We can use "HAVING" only for 3 things i.e, Eating, Conversation & Bathing.
Eg:- I am having shower, I am having bath
I am having discussion with him, I am having Meeting at 9.00
I am having lunch, I am having breakfast.

I'm not having any trouble agreeing with you, GG.
I'm having doubts about the advice given earlier.

1.can we use "having received the letter" instead of "after received the letter"?
2.I abused him for not having done the home work. Is this sentence correct?

1-- the first is right; the second is wrong.
2-- 'Abuse' is the wrong choice; perhaps you meant 'castigated' or 'chastised'. 'Homework' is one word.

My communication trainer told me that 'Having' should be used only when we refer food and as an alternative to the verb eating.

I think your "trainer" should quit communication and go into the catering industry.
