Usage of "function": I'm not functioning...

(1) I'm not functioning properly because I'm sick. I really need some rest.

My non-native English-speaking friends think I can't use "function" this way to describe one's physical condition. That only works for machines.

What is your opinion? Thank you very much.

ansonguy your opinion? If you think of it literally, 'functioning' does apply more to machines than to anything else, but it's a fairly anodyne metaphor in your sentence, so I have to say I like it as you've written it, and I wouldn't change it. CJ

There are a lot of variations on this idea with the word "cylinders."

I'm (not) running on all cylinders.
