Does any member know why 'fortnight' is two weeks?  The syllables 'fort' and 'night' baffle me as they don't seem to make sense when joined to mean two weeks.

Thanks a lot.

for + t < four + teen

fourteen nights, I imagine.

It's not used in American English at all.
