usage of Each after subject

Hi,

Could anyone of you please explain which of the below is correct and the reason behind it?

Three cats each eat...

2. I would reword as: Each of the three cats eats a fish.

Both are correct provided you finish the sentence appropriately.
Three cats each eat three rats. How many rats were eaten in total? (Nine.)
