Usage of do

Hi. I have a question.

EG : 1. We have a number of similarities.

2. We do have a number of similarities.

Are both the sentences correct? If so, what does the usage of 'do' emphasize on? Does it give a different meaning to the sentence? How is it properly used? Thanks in advance!

One of the uses of the emphatic form is to oppose a contradictory remark.

-- We do not have a number of similariities.
-- Yes, we do. We do have a number of similarities.

Hi CJ,

Yes, we do. We really have a number of similarities.

Is 'really' appropriate in the sentence?

Is 'really' appropriate in the sentence? Does it express the same idea as DO here?
Yes. In fact, both are frequently used together. Stress do when you say it.

We really do have a number of similarities.

Hi CJ,

Thank you for your answer.

We really do have a number of similarities.

Do 'really do have', 'really have' and 'do have' all mean the same?

Thanks

all mean the same?
Yes, at least approximately, and the ones with do sound the most insistent to us native speakers. really, by itself, is not typically used to contradict a remark (as illustrated above).

For example,

-- You always pronounce "Wednesday" wrong.
-- I do not.
-- Do too.
-- Do not.
-- Do too.

Hi CJ,
Thank you for your answer. Could you tell me what 'too' means in 'Do too' here? And do you mean 'do' and 'really' are the same thing when emphasizing the main verb but sometimes different in usage?

Thank you

too means so in "Do too".

Do too = Do so.

Now you want to know what so means in "Do so", of course.
The problem is that these words do not have any meaning the way car or brother have meaning.
