Usage of colon and semi-colon

Hello. I often get confused about the usage of the colon and the semi-colon. Does this sentence make sense?
"They see the challenges as arising from: organizational factors, such as the availability of resources; and individual factors, such as the adult nurse inability to evaluate research."

Top answer

Your sentence is over-punctuated. All you should use is three commas: They see the challenges as arising from organizational factors, such as the availability of resources, and individual factors, such as the adult nurse inability to evaluate research. In fact, many would delete those three commas as well, with little or no impediment to understanding.
