Usage of cease in formal writing

The verb, cease, means stop.

I know in everyday English conversation, people use "stop". I want to learn how to use "cease" in writing. I have made up the sentence with the word below.

(1) Ten years ago, the epidemic was finally ceased after seven months of spread.

Can I use "cease" this way in writing, not in conversation? Please help me. Thank you very much.
