Usage of can and could

You can go now if you like. VS. You could go now if you like.
Is there a nuance between them? And do you think the latter sounds more polite? Thank you so much as usual.

Thank you and I have got a gist of it but could you tell me if the latter sounds more polite to you? I know that "could you...." sentences can be polite but I think that the latter is not. What do you think?

They are both polite.
Could gives the person the choice of leaving if they desire. Can gives permission to leave.
