usage of before and after - Past Perfect

In my opinion "before" is used with "past tense" and after with "past perfect"
Why is it exactly the other way round in this example?

I DIDN'T watch the film because I HAD SEEN it in the night BEFORE.

Where/how did you come up with this "rule"? Choice of tense does not have anything to do with the words "before" and "after."
