Usage of as though

Hi there,

Here is an example sentence:

Animals trapped in a stone called ‘amber’ are sometimes so well preserved that they look as though they have just died.

This looks like an unreal situation. Can we use perfect tense with unreal situations?

In British English backshifting for unreal situations is not considered essential with look/seem/feel/etc followed by as if/though.The present perfect in your sentence is fine in BrE.
