Usage of apostrophe 's

Hi there, do I need to use apostrophe 's in the following sentence?
  1. I left my job in 2007 after a misunderstanding between me and the manager of the company. I joined the the company again in 2009 after my friend'sbecoming the new manager of the company.
I know we can say the following:
  • I left my job in 2007 after a misunderstanding between me and the manager of the company. I joined the the company again in 2009 after my friend became the new manager of the company.
But should I use apostrophe 's if I use a gerund?

Top answer

1. after my friend's becoming the new manager 2. after my friend becoming the new manager 3.

  • 1.
  • after my friend's becoming the new manager 2.
  • after my friend becoming the new manager 3.
  • after my friend became the new manager (1) is too stilted to be usable, even if it was theoretically possible.
  • (2) is not possible.

1. after my friend's becoming the new manager
2. after my friend becoming the new manager
3. after my friend became the new manager

(1) is too stilted to be usable, even if it was theoretically possible. (2) is not possible. Use (3).

(By the way, if this is from a CV, I'm not sure that it paints things in the best possible light.)
