Hello,
In response to "How are you?", people say "I'm good". Is this American usage?

Is this also common in British English? I'd think "I'm fine" is the standard response.

It's very casual American usage. It's similar to saying "I'm okay."
Neither is a very positive response. It's a bit like, "Oh, I'm so-so."
