What are the other ways to form the following in standard British English:

"You are free to sit in on the class/lecture".

I don't understand exactly what "in" and then "on" do in the above sentence.

And, is it still right if "on" is omitted?

Do we say "sit in the class" only when there is no active lecture being given and are referring only to the place "classroom".

Thanks,

Thanks Clive.

What would it mean if you omitted "on" in that sentence :

"You are free to sit in on the class/lecture"

Would it mean that the class is just a physical place?

Hi,

Yes, that's what it would sound like.

To sit in on is an idiom that means roughly to attend an event in an unofficial capacity.

So if you sat in on a class, you would be listening to the lecture but you would not be taking the class for credit.

If you sat in on a meeting, you might be there to give advice but not to vote.

I was going to say "You should look this up!", but then I looked
