TITLE: TELOMERASE THERAPEUTICS: TELOMERES RECOGNIZED AS A DNA DAMAGE SIGNAL.
Commentary re: K.Kraemer et al., Antisense-mediated h TERT inhibition specifically reduces the growth of human bladder cancer cells. Clin. Cancer Res., 9: 3794-3800,2003 .
General Idea: Telomerase activity is necessary for the proliferation of most advanced cancer cells.
-Telomerase is repressed in most normal human tissues, but expressed >90% of human tumors.
The purpose for doing this research is to see whether telomerase inhibitors, such as h TR and h TERT, have to be used in cancer cells treatment.
Experiment: the researchers tested AS-ODNs3 complementary, telomerase inhibitor, to the catalytic subunit of telomerase for their effectiveness in influencing cell growth in a bladder cancer cell line,EJ28.
Results:
-Telomerase inhibitors can kill the cancer cell and stop its growth; and also work as apart of cancer cell treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery therapy.
-After treating the cancer cells with telomerase inhibitor such as (h TERT),the results showed a rapid telomerase loss in most bladder cancer cells.
Criticism:
This research was written in a clear and effective manner, especially the introduction. It has all important points that the researchers will go through. In addition, reading only the introduction is enough to give a clear idea for the rest of experiments that will be done later. All figures and tables in this paper are easy to understand and each one has a good explanation. Moreover, the information was well organized from general to specific with more detail. I appreciate the application and promising results discussed in the future application section.
I disagree to the way to present this scientific paper ,it dose not follow the customary divisions of a general scientific paper including Abstract, introduction ,method, result ,discussion and Reference .However, it includes all of these but the data are not organized to the common division.
