Urgent question about...idioms?

I'm from Hong Kong. I'm doing translation assignments for films but I encountered several lines that I don't understand the meaning. I hope someone can help me.

Here are the lines:

-We used to hook up all the time.

-you could have an emotional connection with a shoe on the side of the road.

-Just take her a visit to the boneyard.

-Pick out a polish.

At least I want to find out the meanings of "with a shoe on the side of the road" and "take a visit to the boneyard".
But would appreciate if someone could help me with all of the above. Thank you.
