my essay.
Taking care of my terminally ill, HIV-positive aunt was a scary experience for a young girl who knew very little about the disease. I was scared of getting in contact with hear saliva or the germs in hear clothes- neither did I want to touch the utensils she used in fear of contracting the disease. However something about making her feel comfortable and cozy, making sure she was well taken care of brought joy to my heart. Helping her through the debilitating disease was a saddening but the experience shaped what I wanted to do in the future that is pursue a career in nursing. Perhaps, my most compelling reason for becoming a nurse , is the fact that I intend to take a leadership role in addressing the importance and absolute necessity of nurses in the healthcare delivery . Coming a developing country (Tanzania), where nurses are mistreated and not respected, thus channeling there mistreatment and mistreat there patient, I would like to be involved in changing this façade by setting positive examples. Having experienced some research work, I would like to incorporate more training as a research nurse and help contribute towards finding cures or vaccines for horrendous diseases facing my country such as HIV, Malaria and TB.
The volunteer opportunity at Mdanderson Cancer Center at the -The Texas Medical center in Houston, exposed me to the field of Pediatrics oncology. I volunteered my time in the dermatology laboratory the department of Alopecia Areata. I learned about Alopecia Areata – a disease that mostly affects children, causing hair loss for no apparent reason. I assisted in collecting and organizing DNA samples which were used to search for the specific genes that coded for this disease. This volunteer experience taught me that taking care of patients in not only limited to the curative side, but also extends to the research world.
In the year 2004-2005 I was fortunate to partake in KIDS Hope Program where I volunteered to mentor at-risk elementary school children. For an hour each week, I was able to assist them with there homework’s such as math and reading assignment. Many of this children experience problems in learning due to there external and emotional issue and therefore are usually left behind in class. Being a mentor humbled me by giving an opportunity to experience parts of other peoples lives and understanding the importance of being patient and empathetic.
